The concept of ecumenical unity provides, both due to its historical context as well as its inherent place to Reformed ecumenism, the best expression of a church denomination. The term suggests the realisation of a denomination through acceptance of attestations, pulpit “switching” and employment opportunities between congregations. The term also accommodates the concept of sister church relationship and that of churches in ecclesiastical fellowship.

The concept of ecumenical ties, firmly established in the ICRC and thus widely used by a number of church communities within the Reformed ecumene, expresses the relationship between church communities conducting preliminary discussions aimed at a single denomination. It is the affiliation of church communities that ascribe to different (Reformed) confessions, but still uphold a similar doctrine, service and disciplinary approach. An example of this is the newly found Convention of Reformatory Churches in Southern Africa.

The concept of ecumenical contact may be used to define the ecumenical relationship with churches with which the GKSA gather in the same ecumenical assemblies, without necessarily upholding ecumenical unity or ties – such as the ICRC, the REC and NAPARC. The term ecumenical contact also expresses the relationship between communities that undertake common initiatives in a particular community, without necessarily having ecumenical unity or ties.
