History

A Path of Faithfulness

More than 150 years of theological training in the Reformed tradition.

1869

Founded in Burgersdorp

The Theological School is established as the first Reformed training institution in South Africa.

1905

Moved to Potchefstroom

The School relocates to Potchefstroom where it remains to this day.

1921

Partnership with PUK

Theological candidates can obtain university degrees at the Potchefstroom University.

1945

Formal Agreement with NWU

A contract formalises the relationship between the Theological School and the university.

2018

Synod Decides on RTA

The General Synod mandates investigation of an independent academic institution.

2023

RTA Accepted & NWU Terminated

The General Synod formally accepts the RTA. NWU terminates the 2006 agreement.

New Era

Reformed Theological Academy

The RTA is an independent, non-profit company under ecclesiastical oversight. It ensures full control over theological education meeting national and international standards.

The Curators, elected by regional synods, oversee the RTA's operations and report to the General Synod every three years. All programmes will be finalised by end-2026 when the NWU agreement expires.
